Everything You Need to Know About TLC Vehicle Inspections in NYC

Pre-Inspection checking TLC Vehicles

If you drive a TLC-licensed vehicle in New York City — whether it’s a yellow taxi, green cab, or for-hire vehicle (FHV) — your vehicle must pass regular inspections to remain in compliance with TLC regulations. These inspections help ensure safety, reliability, and adherence to city rules.

This guide breaks down the TLC inspection process step-by-step, based entirely on official TLC guidelines.

📍 Where Are TLC Inspections Done?

All TLC vehicle inspections take place at:

TLC Woodside Inspection Facility
24–55 BQE West
(Between 25th & 26th Street)
Woodside, NY 11377

🔄 Who Needs TLC Inspections and When?

The inspection frequency and type depend on the kind of vehicle you’re operating:

🚕 Yellow Cabs
Three inspections per year

One DMV inspection (can be done at any DMV-authorized facility)
Two TLC inspections at the Woodside location

🚖 Green Cabs (Street Hail Liveries)
Two inspections per year
Both inspections must be completed at the Woodside TLC facility.

🚗 For-Hire Vehicles (FHV)

New FHV License Application

If your vehicle has over 500 miles: You must pass a full NYS DMV inspection.
If it has under 500 miles: You only need a visual inspection.

Renewal of FHV License

TLC will notify you by email to schedule your inspection.
You must pass the inspection before your license can be renewed.

🚐 Commuter Vans & Paratransit Vehicles
Must first be inspected by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT).
After that, a visual inspection is required at the TLC facility.
Must display a valid MC300 sticker from DOT before TLC inspection.

If your vehicle is new or has recently changed plates, you may also need to submit a Plate Notification Form or bring a Hack-Up Letter (for SHL vehicles).

💻 How to Schedule Your TLC Inspection

TLC uses an online appointment system. After your new license application or renewal request is reviewed, TLC will email you instructions to schedule your inspection.

👉 Important: You cannot show up without an appointment. Only vehicles scheduled through the TLC system will be inspected.

❌ What If My Vehicle Fails Inspection?

If your vehicle does not pass inspection:
TLC allows three (3) reinspection attempts within 60 days of the first appointment.
Your compliance date (the deadline to pass) is listed on your appointment letter.

Reinspection Tips:
Address all issues noted in your inspection report.
Bring the same documents you used in the initial inspection.
You do not need a new appointment for a reinspection — just return during inspection hours.

🛡️ Don’t Forget: Your Insurance Must Be Active for Inspection Approval

If your TLC inspection date is around the corner, don’t wait until the last minute. Whether you’re driving for Uber, Lyft, a yellow cab, green cab, or black car service, your insurance must be active and up-to-date for TLC approval.
